Pain is physical. It's also everything around it.

When pain doesn't stop, it changes how you sleep, how you work, how you show up to the people you love, and how you feel about yourself. That's not weakness — it's how the brain and nervous system work. The good news is that the psychological side of chronic pain responds well to structured, practical counselling.

We work alongside your medical team, drawing on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches — matched to what will actually help you.

What counselling can help with

  • Understanding the two-way link between pain, mood and sleep
  • Practical coping strategies for flare-ups
  • Managing fatigue and pacing daily activity
  • Reducing the low mood, anxiety and frustration that often go with chronic pain
  • Sleep difficulties made worse by pain
  • Rebuilding confidence in work, exercise and social life
  • Support for family members and carers
  • Adjustment to a terminal or life-limiting diagnosis

Working alongside your medical care

With your consent, we coordinate with your treating clinicians — including our own consultant rheumatologist for patients with inflammatory or autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, gout and osteoporosis.

Frequently asked questions

Will counselling stop the pain?

Counselling doesn't remove the physical cause of pain, but it consistently reduces how much pain interferes with your life — mood, sleep, activity, relationships — and how much emotional suffering it produces. It works best alongside your medical care.

Is this the same as pain management?

It's the psychological side of pain management. We work alongside your rheumatologist, GP, or pain specialist — not instead of them.

Do you help with fibromyalgia, arthritis, lupus, and long COVID?

Yes. We regularly see people living with rheumatological conditions, inflammatory arthritis, fibromyalgia, endometriosis, post-viral fatigue, cancer-related pain, and neurological pain.

Can I come with a family member?

Yes. Chronic pain affects everyone in the household. We can include partners or carers in some sessions if that would help.

Is this confidential?

Yes. Sessions follow the ethical framework of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
