Support for the person doing the parenting

Most parenting advice assumes your child is co-operating. When they're not — because of ADHD, anxiety, self-harm, or something no one has quite named yet — you need a different kind of support. Parent consultations give you a confidential space to understand what's happening, plan your response, and stop running on empty.

We also work with carers of adult family members living with mental illness — because they need somewhere to go too.

What sessions can include

  • Parenting children and adolescents with behavioural challenges
  • Parenting a child or teen with ADHD
  • Managing emotional regulation and self-harm concerns
  • Strengthening parent-child communication
  • Positive behaviour strategies at home and at school
  • Understanding common mental health conditions — anxiety, depression, OCD, psychosis, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder
  • Supporting a family member with a mental illness
  • Emotional support for parents and carers
  • Understanding treatment options, medication side effects, and recovery

Coordinated care when needed

With your consent, we can coordinate with our in-house psychiatrist for medication questions or a formal assessment (for example, ADHD in adults or adolescents). You stay in control of what's shared and with whom.

Frequently asked questions

Does my child have to attend?

No. Parent consultations are for you — the parent or carer. Many families make more progress when the parent has their own space to think, plan, and be supported. If your child later needs their own counselling, we can arrange that too.

How is this different from a paediatrician or psychiatrist?

A paediatrician or psychiatrist assesses and treats the child. Parent consultations focus on you: understanding your child's behaviour, adjusting your response, and looking after yourself. The two work well together.

My teenager refuses to see anyone — can you still help?

Yes. This is one of the most common reasons parents come. We help you understand what is going on and how to respond, without needing your teenager in the room.

I have a family member with a serious mental illness. Can you support carers?

Yes. Living with or caring for someone with depression, psychosis, OCD, or borderline personality disorder is emotionally heavy. We offer psychoeducation and carer support so you understand the condition, the treatment, and how to look after yourself.

Is this confidential?

Yes. Sessions follow the ethical framework of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
