A psychiatrist and a counsellor at a mental health clinic in Dubai

Deciding to reach out for mental health support is a big step — but knowing whether to book a psychiatrist or a counsellor is often the confusing part. Both help you feel better, but they do it in very different ways.

What does a psychiatrist do?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed medical school followed by expert training in psychiatry. Because of their medical background, psychiatrists can:

  • Diagnose mental health conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, OCD, and psychosis
  • Order blood tests and rule out physical causes of symptoms
  • Prescribe and monitor medication
  • Combine medication with psychological therapies
  • Coordinate care with GPs, psychologists, and schools

What does a counsellor do?

A counsellor (or psychologist working therapeutically) is trained in talking therapy. They do not prescribe medication. Instead, they give you a structured, confidential space to explore what you're feeling and build practical coping skills.

People commonly see a counsellor for stress, relationship difficulties, grief, low self-esteem, mild-to-moderate anxiety, and life transitions.

Who should you see for anxiety, depression or stress?

  • Mild anxiety or situational stress — start with a counsellor.
  • Severe anxiety, panic attacks, or symptoms that don't improve with therapy — see a psychiatrist; medication may be needed alongside therapy.
  • Depression — mild cases often respond well to counselling; moderate-to-severe depression, or depression with sleep, appetite or suicidal symptoms, needs a psychiatrist.
  • Work or relationship stress — counselling is usually the right first step.

When to see a psychiatrist

Book a psychiatrist if you experience persistent low mood for several weeks, frequent panic attacks, extreme mood swings, hallucinations, thoughts of self-harm, or symptoms that haven't improved with therapy alone.

When to see a counsellor

Consider counselling for ongoing stress, relationship concerns, burnout, grief, difficulty coping with change, mild anxiety, or emotional distress without severe psychiatric symptoms.
