Prepared for surgery, prepared for after

Bariatric surgery — sleeve, bypass or gastric band — is a powerful medical tool, but the long-term results depend just as much on what happens in your head, your kitchen and your relationships as on the operation itself. A short psychological assessment before surgery helps you and your surgeon understand what will help you succeed, and what to prepare for.

We work with adults considering bariatric surgery in Dubai and the wider UAE, as well as people already post-operative who need support with body image, eating patterns, relationships, or mood.

What the assessment includes

  • Structured pre-surgical psychological assessment (where appropriate)
  • Exploring your motivation, expectations and readiness for surgery
  • Screening for eating patterns, mood, anxiety, and body image concerns
  • Preparing for the lifestyle, dietary and behavioural changes surgery requires
  • A written report for your bariatric surgeon or insurer when needed
  • Post-operative emotional support and adjustment counselling
  • Working through changes in relationships, identity and body image after surgery

After surgery — the part people don't talk about

Rapid weight loss can change how you see yourself and how others treat you. Old coping habits — food, alcohol, isolation — may resurface in new forms. Relationships shift. Post-operative counselling gives you a private space to work through these changes and to protect the results of your surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Why do bariatric surgeons ask for a psychological assessment?

Bariatric (weight loss) surgery is a major, lifelong change. Most reputable surgeons in Dubai and internationally ask for a psychological assessment to make sure you are well informed, emotionally prepared, and that any eating disorder, untreated depression, or unrealistic expectations are addressed before surgery — not after.

How long does the assessment take?

Usually one or two 50-minute sessions. If additional support is helpful before surgery, we agree that together with you and your surgical team.

Will you provide a report for my surgeon or insurer?

Yes. With your consent we can share a written psychological assessment report with your bariatric surgeon and, where required, your insurer.

What if I have already had surgery and I'm struggling?

Many people benefit from counselling in the months and years after bariatric surgery — around body image, relationships, low mood, or difficulty maintaining the changes. We offer post-operative support without requiring an assessment first.

Is this confidential?

Yes. Counselling follows the ethical framework of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Nothing is shared with your surgeon, insurer, or family without your consent.
