Do I need a psychological assessment before bariatric surgery in Dubai?
Why is a psychological assessment recommended?
Many bariatric programmes include a psychosocial and behavioural assessment as part of multidisciplinary preparation for surgery. International guidance recommends evaluation by a team with access to medical, surgical, nutritional and psychiatric or psychological expertise.1,2
The assessment is not simply a pass-or-fail exercise. It helps identify expectations, eating patterns, mental health conditions, substance use, social support and practical factors that may affect preparation, informed decision-making and follow-up. Occasionally, additional treatment or stabilisation may be recommended before proceeding, depending on the individual risks identified.1
Bariatric surgery changes the digestive system, while long-term care also involves sustained changes in eating, activity, follow-up and responses to emotional or social challenges.
What does the assessment include?
The format and number of assessment sessions vary according to the bariatric programme and the person's clinical needs. The assessment may explore:
- Your reasons and expectations for surgery
- Your understanding of the benefits and limitations of surgery
- Eating patterns, including emotional eating or binge eating and other eating disorders
- Mood, anxiety, and emotional wellbeing
- Previous weight management experiences
- Support available at home
- Readiness for long-term lifestyle changes
- Current or previous mental health conditions and treatment
- Alcohol, medication or other substance use where clinically relevant
What happens after the assessment?
With your consent, a psychological report is shared with your bariatric team and, if required, your insurer.
If additional support is recommended, it does not automatically mean surgery will be cancelled. The recommendation may involve treatment, further assessment or additional preparation intended to address an identified risk or support need before or after surgery.1
Why does mental wellbeing matter after surgery?
Weight loss surgery involves major physical and emotional changes. Some people experience changes in body image, relationships, confidence, or coping strategies after surgery.
Having psychological support available can help you manage these changes, develop healthier coping skills, and adjust to your new lifestyle.
The Aim of Assessment
Psychological assessment is one part of multidisciplinary bariatric care. Alongside medical, surgical and nutritional assessment, it helps the team and patient identify risks, expectations and support needs and plan appropriate follow-up.1,2
