If you or your child takes medication for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), one question often causes unnecessary anxiety:
"Will I be able to bring my medication and continue treatment in Dubai?"
With planning and the right documentation, many people manage the transition without interruption. The key is checking the current rules for your exact medicine before you travel.

Why Some ADHD Medicines Are Regulated

Before travelling, check your medicine against the EDE's current controlled and semi-controlled medicines lists and its personal-import guidance.1 Rely on the official page rather than online forums or older articles, which frequently repeat outdated rules — including references to applying to MOHAP, which is no longer the relevant service for this permit.
Step 2: Prepare Documentation, and Consider Prior Approval
The personal-use medicine import service is provided by the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE), not MOHAP.
For travellers bringing narcotic or psychotropic controlled medicines for personal use, EDE describes prior electronic approval as optional. Travellers must, however, carry the required prescription or medical report and comply with the current documentation requirements that apply to their medicine.1
Useful to have with you:
- A recent, valid prescription
- A medical report or clinical summary from your treating clinician
- Your prescriber's details
- Medicines in their original, labelled packaging
Step 3: Quantity Limits
Current EDE guidance allows travellers to carry no more than the patient's need for a maximum period of three months, subject to the medicine's classification and the applicable documentation requirements.1
Step 4: Plan Beyond Your Initial Supply
An import allowance helps you relocate — it does not replace ongoing medical care.
If you're moving permanently or for an extended period, arrange an appointment with a UAE-licensed psychiatrist well before your imported supply runs out.
Ongoing prescribing in Dubai requires clinical review by an appropriately licensed clinician. Good ADHD care includes reviewing whether the treatment is still effective, checking for adverse effects, monitoring where indicated, and periodically reassessing whether continued medication is needed.2
