Psychiatry
Psychiatrist vs Psychologist in Dubai: What's the Difference and Who Should You See?

When you or a loved one is struggling with mental health, one of the first — and most confusing — questions is: who should I see? In Dubai, patients often hear the words psychiatrist, psychologist, counsellor and therapist used interchangeably, but they describe different professions with different training and different roles. Choosing the right one early can save time, cost and unnecessary distress.
The short answer
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose mental illness and prescribe medication. A psychologist or counsellor is a specialist in talking therapy — they cannot prescribe medication, but they help you understand and change thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Many patients benefit from both, working together.
Psychiatrist
A psychiatrist has completed medical school (typically 5–6 years) followed by several years of specialist psychiatric training. In the UK system, for example, this includes the MRCPsych examinations and a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). Psychiatrists are licensed to:
- Diagnose mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, bipolar disorder, psychosis, OCD and dementia.
- Prescribe and manage psychiatric medication.
- Order and interpret medical investigations (blood tests, brain imaging) when needed.
- Provide some forms of psychotherapy, depending on their training.
Specialist vs Consultant psychiatrist — what's the difference?
Not every psychiatrist practising in the UAE holds a consultant licence. The DHA (and other UAE regulators) issue titles based on level of training and experience:
- A Specialist psychiatrist has completed core psychiatric training and is licensed to assess, diagnose and treat mental health conditions independently.
- A Consultant psychiatrist has completed the full higher specialist training — in the UK/Ireland pathway this means obtaining the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) after MRCPsych — and has additional years of senior clinical experience. Consultant is the most senior clinical grade.
Dr. Indira Priyadarshini holds a DHA Consultant psychiatrist licence, granted only after obtaining the CCT in General Adult Psychiatry (UK). Consultant-level licensing is not held by every psychiatrist practising in the UAE, so it is worth checking your clinician's licensed title before booking.
Psychologist
A clinical or counselling psychologist has a university degree in psychology followed by postgraduate training (typically a doctorate or master's plus supervised practice). Psychologists are experts in psychological assessment and evidence-based talking therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). They do not prescribe medication.
Counsellor / Therapist
A qualified counsellor or psychotherapist has completed accredited training in a specific therapy model — for example person-centred counselling, CBT or systemic therapy — and works with clients on issues such as stress, grief, relationships, parenting, life transitions and mild-to-moderate anxiety or low mood. Counsellors do not diagnose mental illness and do not prescribe medication.
How to choose in Dubai
A useful rule of thumb:
- In most cases it is best to see a psychiatrist first. A psychiatrist is qualified to make (or rule out) a formal diagnosis, and most insurance companies in the UAE will only approve mental health treatment — including ongoing psychology or counselling sessions — once the diagnosis has been confirmed by a psychiatrist. Starting with a psychiatric assessment often saves time and avoids claims being rejected later.
- See a psychiatrist first if symptoms are severe, if there is a possibility of a diagnosable illness (e.g. major depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, ADHD, dementia), if medication may be needed, or if a formal diagnostic assessment is required (for example ADHD or autism assessment).
- See a counsellor or psychologist first if you are struggling with life stress, relationship difficulties, parenting, grief, work burnout, self-esteem, or if you want structured talking therapy without medication — and no diagnosable illness is suspected.
- In many cases the two work together — the psychiatrist confirms the diagnosis and manages medication while the counsellor or psychologist provides ongoing therapy.
A note on titles in the UAE
All mental health professionals practising in Dubai must be licensed by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) or equivalent UAE regulator. Before booking, check that your clinician is DHA-licensed and that their scope of practice — Specialist or Consultant — matches what you need.
How we work at Health Call Clinic
At Health Call Clinic in Dubai Healthcare City, Dr. Indira Priyadarshini provides consultant psychiatric care for adults and adolescents, and Ms. Fariha Khan provides counselling and psychological therapy. When appropriate we work together — for example, a patient may see Dr. Indira for a diagnostic assessment and medication review, and Ms. Fariha for weekly CBT or supportive counselling.
We follow international clinical guidelines (NICE, APA and equivalent) and recommend medication or therapy only when it is genuinely needed, and only for as long as it is necessary. Treatment is reviewed regularly, and where medication can safely be reduced or stopped, we plan that with you rather than continuing prescriptions by default.
When to seek help urgently
